Program Note

Dat$ ME (2024) emerges as a vibrant fusion of classical horn performance and contemporary hip-hop culture, commissioned by the hornist Supitcha Songsivilai for her senior recital. Beyond her classical roots, Songsivilai’s interests in hip-hop and rap inspired this composition.

In Dat$ ME, the composer intertwines the rhythmic essence of rap with the french horn. The horn takes center stage, delivering rhythmic patterns of rap’s dynamic flow, while the piano accompaniment with hip-hop riffs. In the middle of the piece, the music takes a detour, evoking the sonority of Thai folk tunes, adding diversity to the landscape, which then leads into the climactic conclusion.
