Mahakit Mahaniranon is a Thai composer-performer who plays piano and modular synthesizer. His multifaceted practice combines performance, composition, improvisation, sound of traditional Thai music and electroacoustic elements into an eclectic, individual musical expression. His extensive interest in music results in works that reject stylistic boundaries and seek their own identity mixing ambient, noise, free improvisation, Thai traditional, contemporary classical music and experimental electronica. The intensity of his work and his creative process has earned him many opportunities as a solo performer. Various ensembles have included his compositions in their repertoire and they are being performed continuously, e.g. Tacet(i) Ensemble, Princess Galyani Vadhana Institute of Music Youth Orchestra (PYO), Million Wind Philharmonic and TYOY Ensemble. His works and performances have also been performed abroad, including in Singapore, Malaysia, Sweden, Italy, Switzerland, Germany, France, and the United Kingdom. Collaborating with artists in other fields such as Contemporary dance, visual arts, film, and poetry, inspires him. Working with people with different ideas and backgrounds helps him to develop his own work. Mahakit Mahaniranon was part of the foley team for “Krut: The Himmaphan Warriors”, available on Netflix in Thailand. He has received awards from competitions such as the “Best Creative Idea Prize” from the Princess Galyani Vadhana Institute of Music Festival. In 2024, The University of the Art Singapore (UAS), LASALLE College of the Arts invited Mahakit as an Artist in Residence to continue the development of his work “Twilight Phenomena” as part of the Music Research in Singapore Symposium 2024” held at LASALLE College of the Arts, Singapore. He used to be an Artist in Residence at Elektronmusikstudion EMS, Stockholm, Sweden. In 2025, Mahakit participated in notable events in Thailand and abroad, including a collaborative work combining Thai and Swedish cultures—a partnership with Jens Hedman at Yellow Lane, Bangkok and Fylkingen, Stockholm, supported by the Swedish Arts Grants Committee and the Contemporary Art Promotion Fund, Thailand. Furthermore, he was one of the artists performing at BEAST FEaST 2025: Southeast/Northwest, held at the University of Birmingham, United Kingdom, which brought together electroacoustic composers and performers from around the world. He also took part in the concert FREE-FROM: Tradition & Transition in Bangkok, a collaboration with the Goethe-Institut Thailand and the Japan Foundation Bangkok, blending traditional Thai musical culture with diverse art forms such as musical invention, contemporary dance, and visual art from various countries to create new works. Also commissioned to compose new pieces for the IntAct festival in several years. In 2026, he has been commissioned to compose a new piece and perform improvisations with local artists for the Kanazawa International Experimental Music Festival, underscoring his growing influence and recognition within the contemporary music scene. In addition to his creative output, Mahakit is committed to sharing knowledge. He has taught modular synthesizer courses at the Princess Galyani Vadhana Institute of Music, where his approach to teaching combines technical precision with a semi-improvisatory practice. He has also been invited to lecture in various classes at several music colleges in Thailand.
