Definition of Thainess

for Solo Percussion | 5’24” | Grade 5+ | 2024

Program Note

Definition of Thainess was composed as a solo practice piece for a single performer, accompanied by a
pre-recorded track, with an approximate duration of 5 minutes and 26 seconds. The work features the
following instruments:
1. Snare Drum
2. Floor Tom
3. Gong (Thai gong, 4–6 inches, 1 piece)
For this section of the composition, the composer drew inspiration from the role of Thai traditional music
in wind ensembles across different regions of Thailand, especially in ceremonies, events, and
competitions. In such competitions, it is often required that each ensemble perform at least one Thai piece.
Ensembles typically incorporate Thai instruments such as ching (small cymbals), chap lek (small crash
cymbals), and krab (wooden clappers). Some groups may also include the klong khaek (a type of double-
headed drum) to enrich the performance.
