To the Sky

was inspired by the music of brass bands. Personally, I have always loved the colorful sound and style of brass band music, and that inspired me to create this piece with a brass band–like character, but written for Euphonium-Tuba Ensemble.

The work is conceived as a concert overture — lively and engaging, yet also lyrical — intended to open this concert with energy and warmth. I chose the Euphonium-Tuba Ensemble because of its rich, deep, and mellow sound, which perfectly matched the ideas I wanted to express. The piece is meant to be accessible and not overly complex: a small overture that invites the audience into the atmosphere of the performance.

The deeper inspiration came from my own photographs of the sky. To me, looking at the sky feels like floating freely through endless space. Many of these photos were taken from the same location, but at different times and under different weather conditions — resulting in a wide variety of moods, emotions, and images. Similarly, To the Sky is performed by a single ensemble, yet within it lies a diversity of colors, feelings, and imagination.
