Program Note

This composition is the thesis work of Mr. Teerayut Somphon and Ms. Thadarat Taengyai.

Background

At present, traditional folk games are becoming less popular. The researchers aim to preserve these folk games and adapt them to modern times through music composition. This work conveys the essence of traditional folk games by integrating them into a musical piece, as music—through emotions and feelings—is an art form that is easily accessible to people. Additionally, music is deeply connected to customs, traditions, culture, and beliefs, including folk games, which often incorporate lyrics and melodies alongside gameplay activities.

With this in mind, the researchers developed a composition that represents traditional folk games, presenting them in a musical narrative that reflects their cultural significance. This work serves as a means of preservation and promotion for those interested in folk games. The researchers have arranged and orchestrated this composition for a wind symphony ensemble, aiming to contribute to the academic field of music and provide a resource for future studies.

This composition features musical representations of the following folk games:

  • Mon Son Pha
  • Ri Ri Khao San
  • Mae Ngu Aei
  • Jam Jee Ma Khuea Po Pae
