Program Note

Overture for Winds (“Syncopa!”) is an overture for wind ensemble composed for young musicians. The simple melody is exchanged between different instruments, which take on various melodic and harmonic roles. The piece is divided into three sections; fast, slow, fast, each with distinct musical characteristics. It concludes with a return of the melody from the slow section, ending in a majestic manner.
The title “Syncopa” derives from the rhythmic syllable for syncopation in the Kodály Method. This syncopated rhythm appears throughout the piece. Band directors can use this work in their lessons to introduce students to syncopation.
